5 out of 5 stars If you don't read any other review, pleas read this one. Especially my fellow big people out there.   April 26, 2008

I read many reviews before selecting the Platinum. I'd like to clear up some of the reviews that I read. This machine isn't difficult to put together, just read the instructions first and then follow them exactly. Next, the wiring doesn't cut itself, connect it and do what the instructions say, push the excess back into the hole. The machine took me approx. 3 hours to put together, and that wasn't working steady. (Use a rachet set as the instructions recommend.) The system does have one glaring problem. It is difficult to get through a doorway if you don't build it in the room where you are going to keep it. It is big, and it is heavy. Have help when getting the box delivered or be prepared to carry the machine up a few pieces at a time. Build the machine in the room where you want it, (make the space). System woks like the description says. Folks, don't let some of the negative reviews get to you, like any machine sometimes they break, pay attention, be careful, and take your time. It goes together easy, is heavy duty where it needs to be. Just a note for my larger friends out there, I weighed 400+ when I bought the machine, doesn't seem to be any problem with the seat or seat bar. I know it is hard to find stuff. I took the chance and I think it is safe and sturdy. Weider did a good job here. Thanks Weider. By the way, shipping came via ABF trucking and the driver was very helpful. Did what he could to help with the 315 lb. delivery box. Be prepared, and keep track so your not surprised.

4 out of 5 stars How patient are you?   February 3, 2007

First off, I love Amazon, but this can be found for much cheaper at Icon Fitness. I paid $545.00 + shipping for mine, brand new. This model has been replaced by a newer one. Mine was missing a part when it arrived, so we got off to a bad start. Then, in the first three months I had to call service 5 times - the wire harness broke 3 times, the rep counter broke once and the squat straps broke. They were very accomodating and responsive in taking care of my problems. The good part - I noticed a credit for the full amount on my last credit card bill. I ran into my repair guy and he told me they sometimes do that after the third service call. Some of the exercises are are a little awkward to perform on the machine. Of the 75 they tout in the literate, some are repetitive. The instruction video should come on DVD, and there is no detailed instruction on which exercises to use which straps for. Have i scared you off yet? Check out the number of these out there on Ebay. That should tell you something. Don't pay over $600.00 for this one. Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars Trouble Shooting the Weider Crossbow Platinum   October 9, 2007

Trouble Shooting the Weider Crossbow Platinum
MODEL: WESY78730

I would like to start off with the lower wire harness which seems to be most of the problems with this machine and what color wire goes where:

BLACK GROUND WIRE: first connects to the lowest weight limit switch located in the hinge part of the pivot arm or top of the arm, it then multiples down to the highest weight limit switch located at the other end of the pivot arm near the motor, then the black ground wire multiples to a terminal that connects to the resistance sensor located at the end of the pivot arm.

ORANGE WIRE: This is the wire that causes the most trouble it connects to the lowest weight limit switch located in the hinge part of the pivot arm or top of the arm.

WHITE WIRE: Connects to the highest weight limit switch located at the other end of the pivot arm near the motor.

BLUE AND YELLOW WIRES: Connect to the motor at the end or bottom of the pivot arm.

PURPLE WIRE: Connects to a terminal that connects to the resistance sensor located at the end of the pivot arm.

SYMPTOM AND POSSIBLE FIXES:

SYMPTOM: The weight will no longer ajust down to a lighter weight.

FIX: Check the Orange or BLACK wire leading to the low weight limit switch located inside of the hinge of the pivot arm. This will be on the right side of the machine looking from the back. The ORANGE wire may be cut, pinched or pulled out of the terminal as mine was. Splice a longer wire with another terminal on the end and reattach it to the switch.
You may need to remove the switch by running the motor by hand down to the lightest weight and then pulling the cable out and wrapping it around something and hooking it securely.
You will need a small philips head screw driver to get to the screws and a pair or neddle nose pliers to get the the nuts.
Make sure to unplug the machine.

SYMPTOM: The weight will not adjust to a heavier weight.

FIX: Check the WHITE or BLACK wire leading to the high weight limit switch located at the end of the pivot arm on the left side of the machine looking from the back. The wires may be cut, pinched or just worked loose from the terminal. Replace the wires or reconnect them to the switch.

SYMPTOM: When you try to adjust the weight you get something that says
" Release the tension on the cables and set to desired weight"
And the weight readout jumps to 10, 100 or some other number.

FIX: Check the PURPLE or BLACK wire that connects to a terminal that goes to the tension sensor located at the end of the pivot arm or left side looking from the back of the machine. Both of these wires have been known just to fall out of the terminal.
The best fix for this is just to by pass the terminal and splice a wire from the PURPLE wire to the GRAY/BLACK wire and then splice another wire from the BLACK wire to the BLACK wire leading to the resistance sensor.

The best fix that lasts, is to do what I did and what others are doing and disconect the wires from the terminals that are going to the bottom or left side of the pivot arm to the motor, high weight limit switch and the tension sensor, cut the ties that hold them to the pivot arm and pull them out of the pivot hinge encloser that usually cuts or crimps these wires. You will then need to splice wires back to these wires in order to make them longer so that they can then be routed to the outside of the pivot arm hinge and away from the moving parts. Connect the wires back to the wires for the high weight limit switch, motor and sensor then wrap them good with tape a tie them back to the pivot arm using cable ties leaving enough slack for them to move freely outside of the pivot arm hinge and away from the moving parts. I also recomend bypassing the terminal that connects to the resistance sensor and connecting the PURPLE and BLACK wires directly going to the sensor. Now the only 2 wires that are inside of the pivot arm hinge are the ones that go to the Light weight limit switch which can not be avoided because that is where the switch is located.
Hope this helps because the machine is very good if it is working correctly.
It just had poor engineering when it came to the wiring.

4 out of 5 stars not perfect but works pretty well   May 10, 2008

First off I buy tons of stuff from Amazon, but I found this at Walmart for under $300. For that price its a bargain. I wanted a bowflex or weider max, but opted for this machine instead. Keep in mind its electronic and does not have bows. There is a type of pulley system enclosed in the box in the front of the machine. Resistance is set on the control panel is pretty easy to set. The machine is big and heavy, which I like because I have had flimsy "tippy" machines in the past (ie the Chuck Norris machine). Changing to different exercises is pretty easy and you can do all of the basic exercises. The DVD that comes with the machine is pretty helpful. Although its a bit tough to put together I would recommend this machine.

3 out of 5 stars Great Machine! BUT ONLY WHEN IT ISN'T BROKEN!   November 18, 2008
K. Puzio
First off, I'm going to try to rewire the machine as explained in Mr. Stephen Gandy's review here on Amazon. That rewiring is the only thing standing between my Platinum and the garbage dump. That's pretty harsh, so let me explain, especially since I gave the product 3 stars.

I've owned my Weider Platinum for seven years now, and I've had several repairs made, which include the following: replaced the LED/Computer Control Panel once (02/2008), new wires once (02/2008) and the lower wire harness four times (2004, 2006, 02/2008 & later this week!)!!!! Now, although the cost of the part is covered, they charge you for the shipping and handling. They will also send a tech out to make the repair for you, but then you're talking $159, for the lower wire harness repair alone. Do that four times, and you might as well open your own gym!

The wire harness is clearly the big problem with the machine. For those of you who haven't had any problems with it, good luck! We use the machine alot, as both my wife and I work out several times a week, so for the lighter used machines, they may last longer (although when it comes to the poor wiring, who knows?). The latest problem is the orange wire, mentioned in the review by Mr. Gandy. Luckily, my neighbor is an electrician, and I'll be asking him to come over and attempt to rewire the piece with me. If not, I'll try to do it on my own...once it works, this thing better be flawless for another year plus, otherwise, it's adios! You will understand once the wire harness goes on you...it's not a fun thing to repair, with limited access to alot of the parts due to the construction.
